The GOSPEL TRUTH
LETTER OF

CHARLES G. FINNEY

1855

To Asa Mahan

24 September 1855

[published in The Oberlin Evangelist (24 October 1855), p. 175. The letter appeared in an article entitled "Modern Mysteries Explained and Exposed" from the pen of Henry Cowles, the editor]

Of this work, recently issued from the pen of Prest. Mahan, and press of Jewett & Co., Prest. Finney expresses his opinion as follows:

OBERLIN, 18th Sept., 1855.

PREST. A. MAHAN,

Dear Sir:--I have read, with interest and profit, your book entitled "Modern Mysteries Explained and Exposed." I regard this work as ably executed. I have no doubt that the real facts of this mis-called Spiritualism owe their origin to mundane causes. You have sufficiently exposed the folly of any other conclusion. The excitement, confusion and delusion upon this subject had attained a fearful height. Your work ought to quiet this excitement, and lead the scientific world to institute a searching investigation of the real phenomena of so-called Spiritualism, and to a philosophical account of their laws of development. This work will, I trust, be extensively read and well considered, and lead to highly important results. Your brother,

C. G. FINNEY.
