[MS in Gerrit Smith Papers, Syracuse University Library]
Westernville 6, Jan 1855.
My Dr. Br. Smith,
I recd your kind note
by Br Copeland & had time
only to send a verbal reply by
him. I should have written
before but for the fact that

Last Mail, I recd a note
from Br. Copeland urging
my decision. I can not at
present say any further
than when he was here.
The state of things has been
about as bad as possible,
but is changing fast for
the better. I must not leave
here at present. Please say

this to Br. C. & to the brethren.
Br. Smith can you not come
over & spend a we[e]k with us.
Whether it will be my duty
to go. to your place this winter
I can not say. The work is
dispersing & spreading here.
Mrs. F. is with me. & unites
in love to you & Mrs Smith.
